Parental regulation of parent and child screen-based device use

Media use and screen time show both positive negative effects on child development. Parents’ behaviors, perceptions, regulation of parent screen-based device (SBD) may be critical understudied factors in explaining these mixed effects. We developed the Parent Screen-Based Device Use Survey (PSUS) to assess parental multiple SBDs (e.g., computers, phones, TVs) tested its factor structure across two United States samples mothers children aged 2–6 years (total N = 402). Subscales captured SBD related Discipline, Limit-Setting, Involvement, Child Care, Family Norms, Self-Regulation, Dysregulation, Parenting Support, showed good loadings internal reliability. Validity was relation distress, executive function problems, behavior problems. Parental limit-setting involvement were either unrelated or fewer whereas for self-regulation, care, discipline, support, family activities, as well parents’ more dysregulated use, The PSUS holds promise addressing mechanisms that underlie media
